What? A Pez Museum??

Yes, you read correctly!!

Recently, we visited the quirky Pez Museum in Connecticut & had to share! This Museum is great to visit on a summer weekend (a great break from driving if you are on 95). Total blast from the past, you can introduce your kids to Pez Dispensers and the yummy tab-like candy!

Located at 35 Prindle Hill Rd Orange, CT 06477, this museum is right of of I-95. Visiting hours are from 10AM – 6PM on Mondays – Saturdays. This place is even open on Sundays from 12PM- 5PM! The prices can be found on the official Pez Visiting Center’s website.

Did you know that Pez’s headquarter was once located in our own New York City in 1952, but then relocated to Connecticut in 1974. How interesting? Did you also know that the first “Pez” was actually invented as a breath mint in Austria. But in the early 1950s, Pez introduced fruity flavors that we enjoy today, to gain a bigger audience. The first Mickey Mouse Dispensers were created in the 1960s, and the first Giant Pez candy dispenser named Peter Pez was shipped out in 2001.

The visitor center actually opened just last year, December 2011. How crazy is that?

Pez Visitor Center Welcomes you!

Pez Visitor Center Welcomes you warmly, huh?

If you choose to visit, which you definitely should, there are places to eat near by. It is a self tour, and they also give you $2 credit for purchases in their gift shop, after their tour.

Here is a few more pictures that you can enjoy!

I bring dinosaurs to school !

I believe that to every great outfit, there should be a great bag that follows (of course, shoes should match well, too!). With our city kids in mind, I felt it necessary to gather a lot of backpacks from Babesta that would be light, cute, and stylish! These backpacks can be used for: mini vacations, trips to the pool/beach, and even for school! All bags are adorable and have the same theme: animals !

I love animals of all shapes, colors, and sizes. Sharks may seem scary, but in reality, they are very adorable creatures…on our backpacks that is! Dinosaurs may seem scary, but they are pretty friendly! They always give a hand by carrying my lunch and books! They can carry yours, too! Adults and children will love these animal styled backpacks by Skiphop, Mad Pax, and Anais & I.

Not so scary animal backpacks!

How do I beat this heat?

There’s a simple solution to that! At Babesta, we did a bit of research and discovered… SWIMMING POOLS. You can never go wrong with taking a dip in the water to beat the hot summer heat. We found many locations in New York, so no worries about whether it is too far!

According to timeout, there are 11 (that’s right ELEVEN!) different pools, which most are free of cost!! Here are three of the eleven that sounded coolest:

  1. Astoria Pool: located in Astoria Park, 19th St at 23rd Ave, Astoria, Queens: This pool has “Olympic-size lanes.” The pool is ginormous with a lot of space for you to lay out your towels and tan! This is a local favorite of many New Yorkers! It is also free of charge.

  2. The Floating Pool; located in Barretto Point Park, Intersection of Tiffany St. and Viele Ave.  That’s correct. You read correctly. A floating pool. This is a seven lane pool that is atop a movable barge. It was once located in Brooklyn Heights but was moved permanently to Barretto Point Park. There are locker rooms, a great view, and plenty of space to sit down and enjoy a floating pool! And of course, it is free of charge!

    an actual floating pool!!

  3. And critics’ choice, McCarren Park Pool; located at Lorimer St between Bayard St and Driggs Ave, Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
This is a37,571 square-foot pool, which is very spacious! There is plenty of space around the pool for beach chairs and towels. You will certainly have a great time with your families and friends. However, there is usually a large crowd due to tourists and families who want to enjoy the sun! It was renovated and reopened in 2012, and ever since, more and more people have been visiting. It will certainly be a fun time! Once again, free of cost!

Babesta also gathered a few summer outfits and essentials that can be worn to the pool or to the beach!

We have a few favorite swimwear for our city kids!

What do you call a city without water?

The answer? A city without…water…

Imagine a city without water? New York City would not be the awesome New York City without the bridge and ferries! Governor’s Island would not be an island, either! In order to celebrate how awesome water is, Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance is hosting A City of Water Day!

  • WHEN: July 13
  • TIME: 10AM- 4PM
  • WHERE: Governor’s Island, NYC && Liberty State Park, Jersey City, NJ.
  • COST: Free
  • FOOD: check here for all the vendors!

A City of Water Day will have so many fun activities for families, teens, couples, and friends. There will be a boat tour you can sign up for here. You will have to provide a $3 reservation fee that is fully refundable. There will also be a Waterfront Activities Fair, Free Ferry Rides, Live Music, Amazing Food, Water activities (kayaking, canoeing, rowboats), and more! You can also have your own picnic and ride bikes.

MWA started this event to show that water brings us all together. We should be thankful for water!! This is a great event to learn about the importance of water while meeting new people.

Be sure to check it out! Afterwards, maybe you can go visit the mahattanhenge!

Check out MWA’s official site for more information and pictures!

A Little Bit of Summer Yumminess

We were looking for some foodie inspiration & stumbled upon some recipes on Pinterest that made our tummies growl!  S’Mores Pudding cake, refreshing fruit popsicles, and sandcastle sandwiches. Yum! Fun to do together!

Turn up your Babesta Tunes to full volume, and enjoy your fun BBQ time while donning your favorite summer tees !

Recipes:

First: S’mores Pudding discovered on Miss James’ Pinterest site via Food52.

S'mores Pudding

  • S’Mores Pudding Cake
    • 4cups (1 batch) Rich Chocolate Custard (recipe below)
    • 4 sleeves graham crackers
    • 3cups mini marshmallows
    • 1 (13-ounce) jar marshmallow crème
  • Rich Chocolate Custard
    • 6ounces semi-sweet or bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped
    • 3tablespoons cornstarch
    • 1/4teaspoon salt
    • 1cup cream
    • 3 large egg yolks
    • 1/2cup sugar
    • 2cups whole milk
    • 1teaspoon pure vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Smear a thin layer of chocolate custard in the center of a 9×13-inch baking dish. Cover the bottom with a layer of graham crackers and spread 1/3 (about 1 1/4 cups) of the chocolate custard on top of the crackers. Sprinkle 1 cup of mini marshmallows over the custard, and torch them lightly with a kitchen torch, until soft and browned. (You can also put them under an oven broiler for 45 seconds.) Repeat two more times and top with a final layer of graham crackers. (There will be four full layers of crackers, and three of pudding).
  2. Warm the marshmallow crème in the microwave or in a saucepan. Spread over the top of the icebox cake and spread while still warm. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until the crackers have softened to a cakelike texture (test by inserting a thin knife along the side and bringing up a few crumbs). (This can be made up to 24 hours ahead of time, but it is best consumed with a day or two as it will get soggy if it sits too long.)
  3. When ready to serve, brown the top of the cake until tan and toasty with a kitchen torch or under the broiler.
  4. FOR THE CHOCOLATE CUSTARD Prepare the chocolate: Place the chopped chocolate in a medium heatproof bowl.
  5.  Make a cornstarch and egg slurry: Put the cornstarch and salt together in a medium bowl and whisk to make sure there are no lumps. Slowly whisk in the cream, making sure there are no lumps. (To be really sure, reach into the bowl and gently rub out any lumps between your fingers.) Whisk in the egg yolks.
  6.  Warm the milk: In a 3-quart (2.8-L) saucepan over medium heat, whisk the sugar into the milk. Warm for 3 to 5 minutes, until the sugar dissolves, bubbles form around the edges, and the entire surface of the milk begins to quiver. Turn off the heat.
  7.  Temper the slurry: Pour 1 cup (240 ml) of the hot milk into the bowl with the slurry, whisking constantly. The mixture should come together smoothly, with no lumps. If you see any, add a little more liquid and whisk them out. Pour it back into the pan, counting to 10 and whisking constantly as you pour.
  8.  Thicken the pudding: Turn the heat back on to medium and bring the mixture to a simmer, whisking frequently and vigorously, working all the angles of the pot and scraping the bottom. Continue whisking for about 5 minutes, until the custard becomes very thick and starts to boil, with large bubbles that slowly pop up to the surface. Boil for 2 minutes, whisking constantly.
  9. Flavor the pudding: Turn off the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Stir the chocolate into the pudding and let sit for 2 to 3 minutes. Whisk gently until the pudding is smooth and glossy and has fully absorbed the chocolate.
  10. Chill the pudding: Immediately pour the hot pudding into a shallow container. Place plastic wrap or buttered wax paper directly on the surface of the pudding (if you don’t like pudding skin). Cover and refrigerate.

SECOND: Fruit Popsicles via Christi Steckel

fruit popsicles!

    • any fruit you desire that can be cut big enough (watermelons, mangoes, cantaloupes, honeydews, etc.)
    • popsicle sticks, non-separated chopsticks, or skewers

1.  Cut up your fruit into a triangle or any shape you desire (1 1/2 – 2 inch width) ! You can also use cookie cutters to create cute shapes!

2. Center a popsicle stick on the bottom of the fruit and insert midway.

3. Put it in a pan or plate and refrigerate for 30 minutes or more (if you like) to chill it!

4. Serve it with cool whip or just serve it with different decorations!

5. Enjoy!!

Third: Sandcastle Sandwiches via rustsunshine!

sandcastle sandwiches

Ingredients needed:

  • bread slices
  • ham
  • cheese
  • mayo
  1. “Start with two plain ham and cheese sandwiches” without the mayo!!
  2. “Using round cookie cutters, or glasses in various sizes, cut three circles.”
  3. Apply the mayo or any spread you love to the cut bread!
  4. We will use everything! Put the left over crust into a coffee grinder or food processor to make the breadcrumb sand!!
  5. Arrange the cut sandwiches from largest on the bottom to smallest on top (or any order you desire!).
  6. Sprinkle the breadcrumb over to make it look like a genuine sandcastle!!
  7. ENJOY!
    • Note: rustsunshine created mini flags to add on top to show an even more realistic sandcastle!!

These were our top three recipes that we really loved! Babesta feels that it will be a great way to enjoy summer BBQs! You can also get popsicle molds and pour in your favorite drinks and fruits to create juice popsicles!
