Excited for petitePARADE tomorrow and Sunday! The red carpet will be rolled out and Kids' Fashion Week(end) will begin. I'm particularly looking forward to checking out the Parsons School of Design show at 5:00 on Saturday as well as the 1:00 Bonnie Young show (her clothes are fabulous) and the 5:00 Swarovski crystal show on Sunday! This is the most exciting peek into Spring 13 –as we get to see the clothes in action! We'll report back on the "best of", some of which you'll shop on our racks come spring!
We are beyond excited and honored to be named "Best of New York/Best Baby Store" by the Village Voice! Thank you guys so much for picking us! We couldn't be named by a cooler NYC pub! Read all about it here: Village Voice Best of NY: Best Baby Store !
So I recently read about "The Fashion Class" in midtown, where kids can learn fashion illustration, hand sewing, crafting using sewing machines, draping, accessory design and more. This byproduct of the Project Runway generation seemed like it would be a great way for girls to explore their creativity and personal style. I signed my own girls up and for the past few weeks have been popping up to midtown every Saturday. The course started with developing an idea for a line, a logo, a mood board and figure drawing, proportions and more. There's even a fashion show & exhibition at the end of the course.
Even if you are already scheduled out, there are also some cool one-off workshops as well – for instance, on October 27, The Fashion Class is hosting an afternoon workshop on Making Your Own Halloween Costume – $100 per child. The costumes look pretty cool – girls choose between a mermaid costume, a gothic princess costume and Cleopatra. Not too spooky but definitely neat for them to be able to say they made their own ensembles!
The classes are suitable for ages 6-13. Make Your Own Halloween Costume will run from 12:00pm-3:00pm on October 27 at The Fashion Class Headquarters, 21 West 39th Street 4A btwn 5th and 6th avenues. For more info & for more classes, go to www.thefashionclass.com.
Got something in the inbox the other day that looked pretty cool – a new creative arts magazine "for children and their grown ups" called BIG Kids Magazine. The mag is based out of Australia and touts bravery, imagination and generosity- three characteristics I can definitely support! The biannual publication is set to show kids' work and artists' work side by side and the editorial team is child-led.
Supporting the artists community and inspiring creativity in kids are values we share at Babesta -so we're excited! This should be a project worth following! Can't wait to see the first issue. Check out their progress at www.bigkidsmagazine.com.
Pink was the color of choice today at the "Toast to Survivors" luncheon hosted by The Moms (Denise Albert and Melissa Gerstein) and actress Kristin Chenoweth. Beverage sponsor Martini (the sparkling wine) made sure that each attendee was offered a pretty pink mini bubbly with a straw (a definite indulgance on a Monday afternoon). Some of the most rousing words were spoken by patient advocate Dee Dee Ricks (who has been named one of Wall Street's Most Powerful Women), who relayed her own battle with the disease and her first hand look at the inequities in the health care system based on socio-economics.At the end of the luncheon, Martini presented a check to Kristin Chenoweth for her own charity Maddie's Corner, which she noted will be allocated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Right Action for Women.
It made me think about how I've defyed the color pink as much as I could (eschewing the pastel palette of the baby-verse), but today paused to acknowledge what a powerful & cool color it is.
We thought it pretty cool when BASF announced that it is partnering with the Newark Museum to create a Kids' Science Learning Lab at the Museum. As the daughter of a chemist, experimentation is in my blood. I can just imagine how much fun it would be for kids (under supervision) to try out these fun interactive classes on Saturdays. Here's a list of classes:
Sept 29 (Water Loves Chemistry: Operation Filtration), October 6 (Playful Polymers), October 13 (The Rainbow Connection), October 20 (A Hair-Raising Experiment), November 3 (The pHun Factor), November 17 (Happy Hands), December 1 (Hold Everything), December 8 (A Hair Raising Experiment) and December 15 (Playful Polymers)– at 1pm and 3pm. Get on your safety goggles folks! This will be fun!
A for Apple’s Dewi Utility Furry Jacket might just be the piece de resistance for the season. It’s highly versatile and can be worn layered with the fur vest for a luxe-cool, without the fur vest to get an army jacket feel or vest-alone to top off a chic ensemble. The faux fur is soft and the quality and details of this jacket are stand out.
